If you tell me you want to take your family to Disney, one of my first questions might be:
Which Disney?
Because Disneyland and Walt Disney World are both Disney vacations, but they are very different trips.
I love both of them. I have taken my own family to both of them. And I would not automatically recommend the same one to every family.
Walt Disney World is bigger. Disneyland is more compact. Walt Disney World can easily fill a full week. Disneyland can work beautifully as a shorter trip. Disney World gives you more resorts, parks, restaurants, transportation choices, and things to plan.
That last sentence may sound exciting or exhausting depending on your personality.
So instead of asking which resort is “better,” here is how I would decide which one makes more sense for your family.
Choose Disneyland If You Want a Shorter Disney Vacation
One of Disneyland’s biggest advantages is how much Disney you can experience in a smaller space.
Disneyland Resort has two theme parks, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, located directly across from each other. Downtown Disney and the three Disney-owned hotels are also nearby.
You can walk almost everywhere.
That makes Disneyland one of my favorite choices when a family wants a Disney vacation but does not necessarily want Disney to consume an entire week.
You can have a very full Disney experience in a few days and then go home, head to the beach, visit another part of Southern California, or add something else to the trip.
Walt Disney World is different.
There are four theme parks, multiple resort areas, Disney Springs, water parks, dozens of Disney hotels and an enormous transportation system tying everything together.
There is simply more of everything.
That can be wonderful.
It can also mean that a four-day Disney World vacation feels like you barely got started.
If you only have a long weekend or a few vacation days available, Disneyland often gets my vote.
Choose Walt Disney World If You Want Disney to Be the Whole Vacation
Walt Disney World works especially well when the vacation itself is Disney.
You can check into your resort, stay inside the Disney bubble and spend several days moving between parks, restaurants, pools, resorts and other experiences.
For many families, five to seven days gives you much more breathing room at Walt Disney World than trying to squeeze everything into a short trip.
You still will not do everything.
I repeat: you are not going to do everything.
But with more time, you can build in a slower park day, spend an afternoon at your resort or go back to something your family loved instead of treating your vacation like an obstacle course.
If your family wants a full Disney vacation and has the time for it, Walt Disney World offers a much bigger experience.
Disneyland Usually Requires Less Transportation
This is one of the biggest practical differences between the two.
At Disneyland, once you are in the resort area, you can walk from one park entrance to the other in a matter of minutes.
At Walt Disney World, getting somewhere is part of the day.
Depending on where you are staying and where you are going, you may use buses, the Skyliner, monorail, boats, rideshare or your own vehicle.
That does not make Disney World transportation bad.
It just means you need to account for it.
If you have little kids, grandparents, someone with mobility concerns, or a family that does not enjoy spending extra time getting from place to place, Disneyland’s compact layout can be a major advantage.
Walt Disney World Gives You More Resort Choices
Disneyland Resort currently has three Disney-owned hotels.
Walt Disney World has a much larger range of Disney Resort hotels, from Value resorts to Moderate, Deluxe and Deluxe Villa properties.
That gives Disney World a big advantage if the resort itself matters to your vacation.
Maybe you want an affordable room because you will barely be there.
Maybe you want a Skyliner resort because transportation matters.
Maybe the pool and resort restaurants are a major part of the trip.
Maybe you are traveling with grandparents and want everyone nearby without sharing one hotel room.
Disney World gives us many more options to match the resort to the family.
Of course, more choices can also mean more research.
That is why I start with your family’s priorities instead of asking you to compare every Disney hotel on the internet.
Disneyland Can Be Easier for Families Who Want Flexibility
Disneyland still requires planning.
You need tickets, and theme park reservations are currently required in addition to valid park admission.
But Disneyland often feels easier to adjust once you are there because everything is so close together.
Park Hopper can be especially useful because Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure are directly across from one another.
If one park feels busy or your family changes its mind, switching parks does not require another transportation adventure.
At Walt Disney World, hopping between parks takes more time, even though Park Hopper tickets allow you to visit more than one theme park in a day.
For families that like to decide things as they go, Disneyland’s layout can make spontaneity easier. Disneyland currently requires valid admission and a theme park reservation, while Walt Disney World no longer requires reservations for standard date-based tickets, although some other admission types still may.
Walt Disney World Has More Variety
This is where Disney World really separates itself.
Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom all feel very different.
A family with teenagers may spend a lot of time at Hollywood Studios and EPCOT.
Someone who loves animals might consider Animal Kingdom a must.
A family taking young children for their first Disney trip may put more emphasis on Magic Kingdom.
And then there are the resorts, restaurants, and other experiences outside the parks.
Disney World gives families a lot of variety within one vacation.
If everyone in your group has slightly different interests, that can be a major advantage.
Disneyland Has More Disney History
There is also something different about Disneyland because it is the original park Walt Disney personally opened.
It is smaller, but that does not mean it feels like a lesser Disney experience.
In some ways, it feels more concentrated.
There are classic attractions, newer experiences, Disneyland-specific rides, and Disney California Adventure directly next door.
I also think Disneyland can be especially good for repeat Disney travelers because there are enough similarities to feel familiar while still being a completely different trip from Walt Disney World.

Which One Is Better With Little Kids?
This is where people often expect me to automatically say Disneyland.
And sometimes I would.
The smaller footprint is helpful. Walking between parks is easy. You can return to your hotel without crossing half of Florida.
But there are families with small children who absolutely love spending a full week at Walt Disney World.
The better question is how your family travels.
Does your child nap?
How long can everyone realistically handle a park day?
Does your family want one big Disney vacation or a shorter getaway?
Do you want to spend time at the hotel pool?
How much transportation can everyone tolerate?
Those answers matter more than the age printed on your child’s birth certificate.
Which One Is Better With Teenagers?
I actually think both can be excellent.
Teenagers may love Disneyland because it is easy to move between parks and there are plenty of thrill rides within a compact area.
Walt Disney World gives them more choices, more restaurants, more park variety, and more opportunities to let older kids have some independence.
My own approach to Disney changed a lot as my kids got older.
You do not need to plan a Disney vacation with teenagers the same way you planned Disney when everyone needed a stroller and a character breakfast.
And that is kind of the point.
The best Disney trip changes as your family changes.
Which Disney Vacation Is Cheaper?
There is no clean winner.
A shorter Disneyland trip may cost less overall simply because you are staying fewer nights.
But hotel prices, airfare, tickets, transportation, dining and travel dates all affect the final number.
If you live closer to California, flights can completely change the comparison.
If you can drive to Disneyland, that changes it even more.
If you want seven days of Disney and a resort experience, Walt Disney World may give you more accommodation choices across different price ranges.
I would much rather compare two realistic trips for your actual family than tell you one destination is always cheaper.
So, Disneyland or Walt Disney World?
Here is my simplified version.
Choose Disneyland if you want a shorter trip, love the idea of walking everywhere, want less transportation, and prefer a more compact Disney experience.
Choose Walt Disney World if you want a longer vacation, want Disney to be the main destination, love having more resort and park choices, or have a family with lots of different interests.
And choose either one if it is simply the trip your family is excited about.
There is no universally perfect Disney vacation.
The goal is not to book the Disney trip someone else says you should take.
It is to figure out which one works for the people actually going.
